The Indian passenger car and utility vehicle maker, Tata Motors entered into the luxury MPV segment with the Tata Aria. The car is no doubt good, but with an expensive price tag it made customers go away rather than coming for it. Initially the car was launched in the 4X4 variant which, even we feel was exorbitantly priced high up in the MPV segment. Not garnering many sales volumes, the company brought in a 4X2 variant of the Tata Aria at a lower pricing, Rs. 13.44 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai). The car comes equipped with a 2.2.litre, DiCOR diesel engine that produces 140 BHP of power at 4000 RPM and 320 Nm of torque at 1700 RPM.
To gain sales volumes, Tata Motors has started to sell the Aria in the European markets also. According to Hormazd Sorabjee’s tweet, the European version of the car also gets the same engine but it complies with Euro V emission norms and has been given a boost in the power and torque figures. Tata Motors has also confirmed that the same engine will be coming to the Indian market soon. Currently the automatic version of the Tata Aria Concept is equipped with this engine.
The engine being talked about here is the same 2.2 litre DiCOR diesel engine but with a power output of 155 BHP at 4000 RPM and 400 Nm of torque at 1800 RPM as opposed to the 140 BHP of power and 320 Nm of torque in the manual version. With such a boost in power, it might be able to give some tough competition to the hugely popular Mahindra XUV500 which doesn’t have an Automatic version yet (expected in October 2012). Tata Motors will be working fast on getting a facelift of the Aria with improved looks and the company might introduce the powerful engine at the same time, giving the Aria the much needed improvements to gain customers attention.
