Tata Sierra ICE spotted testing, set for late 2025 launch with petrol and diesel options
The iconic Tata Sierra is making a comeback, and the first spy shots of its internal combustion engine variant have surfaced as testing begins on Indian roads. Unveiled in a near-production form at the Auto Expo 2025, the SUV retains its distinctive silhouette, paying homage to the original Sierra from the 1990s. Tata Motors is gearing up for the SUV’s official launch, expected by the end of this year.
Classic Design with Modern Touches
The camouflaged prototype reveals several key design elements reminiscent of the original Sierra while incorporating modern styling cues. Notable features include the signature curved rear windows, a high-set bonnet, and squared wheel arches. The front showcases a split headlamp setup, while the rear sports a connected LED light bar. Unlike the Sierra EV, the ICE version features a central air intake on the lower bumper, indicating its combustion engine setup.
While the test mule was seen with steel wheels, higher trims are expected to feature stylish 19-inch alloy wheels, enhancing the SUV’s road presence.
Interior and Features
Though the spy shots didn’t offer a look inside the cabin, the version displayed at Auto Expo 2025 featured a floating triple-screen layout and a four-spoke steering wheel. It’s likely that the production model will incorporate components from Tata’s existing SUV lineup, ensuring cost efficiency without compromising on modern features.
Powertrain Options: Petrol and Diesel
Tata Motors is yet to disclose full powertrain specifications, but the ICE Sierra is expected to house a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine producing around 170 HP and 280 Nm of torque. A diesel engine option will also be available, broadening its appeal among traditional SUV enthusiasts.
Launch Timeline and Market Competition
The ICE variant of the Tata Sierra is expected to hit showrooms shortly after the launch of its electric counterpart, with both versions likely arriving by the end of 2025. Positioned below the Harrier in Tata’s SUV lineup, the Sierra will compete with popular models like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos and Maruti Grand Vitara. With an anticipated length of around 4.3 metres, the Sierra aims to strike a balance between urban practicality and rugged appeal.
As testing continues, more details regarding features, variants and pricing are expected to surface in the coming months, building anticipation for the revival of this legendary nameplate.
