Highest EV registrations recorded in Uttar Pradesh

India has witnessed significant growth in electric vehicle adoption over the past five years, with 36.39 lakh EVs registered across the country, according to Vahan data. This figure represents 3.38% of the total vehicle registrations in the same period.

From April 1, 2019, to March 31, 2024, India recorded total vehicle registrations of 10.75 crore. Among these, EVs accounted for a notable share, marking a steady transition towards sustainable mobility solutions.

Uttar Pradesh Leads in EV Registrations

Uttar Pradesh emerged as the state with the highest number of EV registrations, recording 6,65,247 units over the last five years. This accounts for a substantial share of the state’s total vehicle registrations, which stood at 1.53 crore during the same period.

Maharashtra and Karnataka Follow

Maharashtra secured the second position, registering 4,39,358 EVs, making up 3.97% of all vehicles registered in the state. Karnataka followed closely with 3,50,810 EV registrations, constituting a higher percentage of 4.80% of the state’s total vehicle registrations.

Other Leading States

Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan also contributed significantly to the country’s EV adoption, with 2,28,850 and 2,33,503 registrations respectively. Other states rounding out the top ten in EV registrations include Bihar, Delhi, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Kerala.

States with Lower EV Penetration

On the other end of the spectrum, Sikkim, Lakshadweep, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Ladakh reported the lowest number of EV registrations, highlighting the disparity in adoption across different regions of the country.

A Step Towards Sustainability

The rising number of EV registrations underscores India’s growing inclination towards cleaner transportation alternatives. However, the overall EV market share of 3.38% suggests that there is still significant room for growth in the sector. Factors such as infrastructure development, state-specific policies, and consumer awareness are likely to play pivotal roles in accelerating this transition.

As India continues to push for greener mobility solutions, the data reflects both achievements and areas that require targeted efforts to ensure uniform EV adoption across all regions.
