The new Bajaj Chetak is based on a new platform and comes with more features
Bajaj Auto has officially unveiled the next-generation Chetak scooter, marking a significant upgrade to the iconic model. The launch includes the mid-spec and top-end variants, priced at Rs. 1.2 lakhs and Rs. 1.27 lakhs (ex-showroom) respectively, with plans to introduce the base variant later. Built on a new platform, the updated Chetak brings additional features and improved specifications, aiming to strengthen its position in the competitive electric scooter market.
Enhanced Features and Platform Upgrades
The new Chetak boasts several upgrades, starting with a revised frame and a 3.5kWh battery positioned under the floorboard. This change not only improves weight distribution but also results in a 3 kg reduction in battery weight. Bajaj claims the updated battery offers an extended range of 153 km on a single charge, addressing concerns of range anxiety. Charging capabilities have also been enhanced with a 950W charger, enabling a 0-80% charge in just three hours.
In terms of performance, the Chetak continues to use a 4kW motor, delivering a top speed of 73 km/hr in the mid and top variants and 63 km/hr in the base model. These specifications remain consistent with the previous generation, ensuring familiarity for returning customers.
Focus on Practicality and Comfort
One of the standout changes is the increased storage capacity, with a new 35-litre boot—among the largest in its category. The repositioning of the battery under the floorboard has liberated space, addressing a key limitation of the previous model. Additionally, the wheelbase has been extended by 25 mm to 1350 mm, and the seat lengthened by 80 mm, promising a more comfortable ride for both rider and pillion.
Modern Features for a Connected Ride
The top-spec variant, designated as the 3501, is equipped with several cutting-edge features. These include a new touchscreen TFT display with integrated maps, Bluetooth connectivity, and screen mirroring. Riders can also access features such as document storage, geo-fencing, theft alerts and overspeed warnings, making the scooter a tech-forward choice.
Warranty and Market Competition
Bajaj is offering a 3-year/50,000 km warranty with the new Chetak, reinforcing its commitment to reliability. The scooter faces stiff competition from established players like the TVS iQube, Ather Rizta, Ampere Nexus and the Ola S1 range.
Future Plans and Availability
While the mid and top-end variants have been launched, Bajaj plans to introduce the base variant, dubbed the 3503, at a later date. This strategy allows the company to cater to a broader audience, targeting both premium and budget-conscious buyers.
With its blend of improved performance, modern features, and enhanced practicality, the new Bajaj Chetak aims to build on the legacy of its predecessor while carving a niche in the growing electric scooter segment.
