Maruti Grand Vitara 7-Seater spotted testing for the first time in India
Maruti Suzuki’s upcoming three-row SUV, based on the Grand Vitara, has been spotted testing on Indian roads. This heavily camouflaged prototype is codenamed Y17. The seven-seater version of the Grand Vitara is expected to introduce a fresh design approach, distinguishing itself from its five-seater counterpart.
Design Highlights
The test mule retains some visual elements of the current Grand Vitara, such as the shape of the doors, the window line and the positioning of the mirrors. However, notable changes include a slightly extended rear overhang to accommodate the additional row of seats. An increase in wheelbase also seems likely, although exact measurements are yet to be revealed.
Subtle design cues visible through the camouflage suggest inspiration from the upcoming e Vitara. These include a distinctive lighting setup with Maruti’s signature three-dot LED Daytime Running Light motif positioned on top, while the main headlamps are mounted on the front bumper. The bumper design itself features centrally mounted air inlets, resembling the styling of the e Vitara. At the rear, the prototype appears to sport wraparound, full-width LED tail lamps, hinting at a more contemporary design approach.
Interior Changes
While interior details remain limited, glimpses of the test vehicle suggest a new dashboard layout featuring a large, free-standing touchscreen infotainment system. The redesign points to a departure from the existing Grand Vitara’s cabin, aiming to provide a more premium experience suitable for a three-row configuration.
Platform and Powertrain
The Y17 will share the Global C platform with the current Grand Vitara. It is expected to carry over the same engine options, including the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and the 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid powertrain. Transmission choices are also likely to mirror the five-seater model.
Production and Launch Timeline
Maruti Suzuki plans to manufacture the three-row Grand Vitara at its upcoming facility in Kharkhoda, Haryana. This new plant, set to become operational by mid-2025, will reportedly debut with the Y17 SUV as its first model. A market launch is anticipated towards the end of 2025.
Competition
Once launched, the seven-seater Grand Vitara will enter a competitive segment, taking on rivals like the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari and MG Hector Plus. These models also serve as three-row derivatives of their respective five-seater versions, positioning the Y17 as a direct challenger.
The addition of a three-row Grand Vitara to Maruti’s SUV lineup reflects the brand’s strategy to cater to the growing demand for spacious and versatile family vehicles. By combining the proven platform and powertrains of the Grand Vitara with updated styling and interior features, Maruti aims to carve a niche in the competitive three-row SUV segment. As more details emerge closer to its launch, the Y17 promises to be a significant addition to Maruti’s portfolio.
