Tata Hyperion turbo petrol engine to be more powerful and E20 fuel compliant
Tata Motors has officially unveiled its new turbocharged direct injection petrol engine, named ‘Hyperion,’ for the upcoming Curvv coupe SUV. This 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder engine, which was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2023, marks a significant technological advancement for the automaker and is set to debut in the Curvv. The engine’s introduction is part of Tata’s strategy to enhance performance and efficiency in its compact vehicle lineup.
The Hyperion engine is a 1198cc unit that delivers 125 HP at 5000 RPM and 225 Nm of torque at 1700-3500 RPM. This output represents an increase of 5 HP and 55 Nm over Tata’s existing 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine, which is currently available in models like the Nexon. The additional power and torque are particularly important given the Curvv’s extended wheelbase, which adds to the vehicle’s overall weight.
This new all-aluminium engine boasts several advanced features, including variable valve timing technology, a variable oil pump and an integrated exhaust manifold in the cylinder head. Additionally, it includes a water-cooled variable geometry turbocharger, designed to improve torque delivery at lower RPMs, thus enhancing acceleration.
The Hyperion engine is compatible with E20 fuel, aligning with India’s push towards ethanol-blended petrol and is expected to offer improved refinement, performance and fuel efficiency compared to its predecessor.
The Curvv, Tata’s latest addition to its SUV lineup, will be available in multiple powertrain options, including petrol, diesel and electric variants. The diesel version will feature the familiar 1.5-litre engine from the Nexon, while the electric version will offer two different battery configurations. Tata Motors plans to reveal the prices for the Curvv on 7th August, with expected price ranges for the petrol and diesel variants between Rs. 12 lakhs and Rs. 20 lakhs. The electric variant is anticipated to be priced between Rs. 16 lakhs and Rs. 22 lakhs.
The Curvv is expected to come equipped with several segment-first features. The market’s reception of the Hyperion engine and the Curvv will be closely watched as Tata aims to strengthen its position in the competitive compact SUV segment.
