Force Gurkha to get a new entry-level variant without 4×4
Force Motors is developing a new 4×2 variant of its 3-door Gurkha. This upcoming model aims to rival Mahindra Thar RWD, targeting buyers who desire a robust vehicle without the necessity of off-road capabilities.
The new Gurkha 4×2 is expected to be equipped with the same 140 HP, 2.6-litre diesel engine found in the current model, paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Unlike its 4×4 counterpart, this variant will lack the manual transfer case and differential locks, making it a more affordable option for consumers. The decision to offer a 4×2 version follows the company’s recent updates to the Gurkha, which included a more powerful engine, new features and the introduction of a 5-door body style.
Positioned as an entry-level model in the Gurkha range, the 4×2 variant is expected to attract a broader audience, particularly those who drive in urban environments. This mirrors Mahindra’s strategy with the Thar, where the RWD models now constitute nearly 50 percent of its sales. The Gurkha 4×2, however, will not benefit from the tax concessions available to compact segment models with engines below 1.5-litre, potentially affecting its competitive pricing.
Currently, the 3-door Gurkha is priced at Rs. 16.75 lakhs (ex-showroom). The new 4×2 variant is anticipated to be more competitively priced, closer to Rs. 15 lakhs (ex-showroom), positioning it against the Thar 4×2, which ranges from Rs. 11.35 lakhs to Rs. 14.10 lakhs (ex-showroom).
The Gurkha 4×2 will maintain the recent enhancements and features introduced in the latest update of the model. It will continue to offer a four-seater configuration with forward-facing rear seats, providing a comfortable ride for urban commuters and adventure enthusiasts alike.
Force Motors’ introduction of the Gurkha 4×2 reflects a strategic move to make the rugged SUV more accessible to a wider audience. By offering a more affordable variant without the hardcore off-road hardware, the company aims to attract customers looking for a lifestyle vehicle suited for both city and occasional off-road use. The market response to this new variant will be crucial in determining its success against established competitors like the Mahindra Thar RWD.
