Mercedes G-Class goes electric, looks very similar to the ICE powered variants
Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the highly anticipated G-Class electric SUV ahead of its debut at the Beijing Motor Show. Named the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology, this electric iteration of the iconic G-Class promises strong performance and off-road capabilities.
One of the notable aspects of the G 580 is its adherence to the traditional G-Class design, with subtle modifications to distinguish it from its combustion engine counterparts. The incorporation of EQ badges and aerodynamic enhancements contribute to its sleek appearance while maintaining the rugged essence of the G-Class.
Under the hood, the G 580 features four electric motors – one for each wheel. This configuration delivers a maximum output of 587 HP and 1165 Nm of torque. This powertrain is paired to a unique 2-speed gearbox.
Despite its electric propulsion, the G 580 remains true to its heritage by offering strong off-road capabilities. With features like virtual differential locks and a shiftable low-range transmission, it promises to tackle challenging terrain with ease. Mercedes has also introduced innovative functions such as G-Turn and G-Steering to enhance manoeuvrability in off-road conditions.
The G 580 is equipped with a 116 kWh battery pack, delivering a claimed range of 470 km on a single charge. Notably, Mercedes emphasises the vehicle’s ability to sustain off-road driving for extended periods, thanks to lower speeds and regenerative braking. The incorporation of the battery pack into the chassis not only enhances structural integrity but also provides additional protection during off-road excursions.
Despite its capabilities, the G 580 does face some limitations compared to its petrol-powered counterparts. Ground clearance is slightly compromised due to the flat floor design and the vehicle’s weight is notably higher, attributed to the battery pack.
In terms of charging capabilities, the G 580 supports fast-charging at speeds of up to 200kW, ensuring minimal downtime during long journeys. Additionally, Mercedes offers a G-Roar function for an immersive driving experience, reminiscent of traditional engine sounds.
Overall, the Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology represents a significant leap forward in electric SUV technology, combining the iconic design and legendary off-road prowess of the G-Class with electric propulsion.
