Trucks to get factory-fitted air-conditioned cabins from October 2025
In a big move aimed at improving the working conditions and safety of truck drivers, the Indian government has mandated that all new trucks manufactured after 1st October, 2025, must be equipped with factory-fitted air-conditioned cabins. The decision, finalised by the road transport ministry after several years of deliberation and consultation with stakeholders, was officially announced through a gazette notification issued recently.
The directive applies to vehicles falling under the N2 and N3 categories, which primarily encompass commercial trucks. The ministry emphasised that the air-conditioning systems must adhere to notified automotive standards, ensuring the comfort and well-being of drivers during long journeys.
Earlier this year, in July, a draft notification proposed implementing this requirement from January 2025. However, after thorough consultations with stakeholders, the government decided to extend the implementation date to 1st October, 2025.
The decision to mandate air-conditioned cabins is not only a positive step for driver well-being but also opens up new possibilities for the truck manufacturing industry. The requirement will enable manufacturers to sell chassis with pre-fitted air-conditioned cabins, a departure from the current practice where vehicle body builders handle cabin installation. The modification of the vehicle dashboard and other components necessary for the AC system will now be the responsibility of the manufacturers themselves.
This move comes in the wake of a 2020 survey conducted by a non-profit organisation across 10 states, revealing alarming trends among truck drivers. Nearly half of the respondents admitted to driving vehicles even when fatigued or sleepy. The introduction of air-conditioned cabins is expected to address driver fatigue, contributing to enhanced road safety.
Some truck owners might not be happy with this decision because the addition of AC in the cabin will increase the cost of the trucks and the use of AC will reduce the fuel efficiency of these vehicles.
