The specs of the upcoming Maruti Suzuki and Toyota hybrid SUVs have been leaked, strong hybrid models exert excellent power
At a time when Maruti Suzuki and Toyota are aggressively readying their Hyundai Creta-rivalling hybrid SUVs, some the specs of the cars have been leaked online. And we have some interesting revelations to share.
Both the SUVs will come powered by 1.5-litre engine mild hybrid and a strong hybrid powertrains.
We have come to know that the mild hybrid exerts a maximum power of 101.64 HP which is exactly same as that of the recently introduced K15C engine on 2022 Maruti Suzuki Ertiga. It features Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki (SHVS) technology.
So, it’s nearly confirmed that the SUVs are going to get the same K15C engine on the mild hybrid trims.
The mill will come mated to a 6-speed manual or an automatic transmission with an option of ‘Suzuki All-wheel Drive’ system too, probably, taken from the Jimny. We believe the autobox would the same torque converter the Ertiga sports.
The strong hybrid, on the other hand, exerts 114.41 HP and will come mated to a eCVT gearbox. Except for the turbo petrol versions, none of the variants of the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, both petrol and diesel, produce these many horses. They are marginally down on power.
Similarly, all the 1-litre turbo petrol TSI variants of the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun are also marginally low on power when compared to the upcoming strong hybrid’s 114.41 HP output.
While these are paper figures, it must been seen how the Japanese SUVs replicate the higher numbers on road.
But considering the cars are assisted by instant torque electric motors, we can safety say both the SUVs are in for some serious performance. It won’t be surprising if they accelerate faster than Volkswagen Group’s 1-litre TSIs and Hyundai’s 1.5-litre CRDIs too.
Toyota’s version of the SUV codenamed D22 will be called Hyryder and its unveil will take place on 1st July. Maruti Suzuki’s version has been codenamed YFG, but we don’t know its exact name yet.
The strong hybrid will also be offered with selectable drive modes unlike the recently launched Honda City e:HEV hybrid sedan. There would be 3 drive modes – pure petrol, hybrid drive, and pure EV.
In the pure EV mode, the car is expected to run for about 80-100 km which is pretty decent for a hybrid. In addition, the overall fuel efficiency is expected to be upwards of 23 km/l.
This project is a joint effort of Maruti Suzuki and Toyota wherein the partners will make 2 premium SUVs 1 for each with segment-best features and strong-hybrid powerplant to take the fight against Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos.
Both cars will be manufactured by Toyota with majority of the component suppliers from Maruti Suzuki’s stable. The unofficial production-ready sketches of both the SUVs pictured above got leaked online a just few days back.
Both the cars will be proper midsize SUVs measuring more than 4.3 metres in length providing ample space on the inside like the Creta. They will also sport bulbous dimensions for good road presence.
With the commencement of trial production of both the cars, their launch might happen in July end with deliveries going full-swing by Diwali.
