The third generation Toyota Fortuner could get a mild hybrid system on its workhorse 2.8-litre diesel engine
On the lines of its recent hybrid push not just in India but throughout the world, it seems, Toyota is silently readying a mild hybrid system for its popular 2.8-litre diesel engine that powers its butch SUVs and MPVs like the Fortuner.
This new engine will reportedly drive the third generation Fortuner that’s currently under development. The model could see the light of the day as early as mid next year with an imminent launch in all potential markets including India before the year ends.
This update comes in the backdrop of the Toyota Fortuner GR Sport launch in India just a few days back. So, the GR-S could be the last special edition of the second generation Fortuner that made its global unveil 7 years ago in 2015.
Apart from the mild-hybrid system itself, sources said, the third generation Fortuner will be built on Toyota’s TNGA- F platform that can easily accommodate a mild hybrid system along with the large 2.8-litre diesel mill
Also, the upcoming car will be the first Toyota diesel SUV to get a mild hybrid system.
The 2.8-litre 4-cylinder engine currently exerts 201 HP and 500 Nm. It comes mated to either an automatic or manual transmission. The mild hybrid system will couple an additional alternator to the engine which will then power a bigger battery.
The electric starter will be used to provide head start during acceleration and will also drive the car during less throttle inputs. The system will power the AC compressor to a certain extent thereby taking away a whole lot of load from the engine.
The battery will be primarily charged by the alternator while regenerative braking will partially contribute its part. During powerful launches, both the engine and the starter motor will work together for a huge torque rush.
