April 2022 2-wheeler sales figures paint a shocking picture, Bajaj Pulsar 150 and TVS Apache series fare very badly
The 2-wheeler sales in April 2022 has many shocking and surprising twists and turns. Some of the developments this time are the first for the industry in the last half a decade. Let us go through them 1 after another.
The biggest and rude shock comes from the dismissal performance of the TVS Apache series and Bajaj Pulsar 150. Both are not in the list this time.
The Apache series which consists of the 160s and the 200s used to easily clock over 30k units every month. Even in March, the combo recorded 27,439 units.
Similarly, Pulsar 150, which was once the country’s best selling 150 cc bike, used to clock over 15-20k units every month these days. Even in March, it recorded 18,044 units.
But last month, both have performed very poorly. The Apache series have sold just 7342 units while Pulsar 150 has sold just 2177 units. We must wait and watch if this development is temporary due to supply issues or the bikes have truly performed poorly.
The YoY growth this time isn’t a factor to ponder around as during April, last year, the Covid pandemic was at its peak and all the 2-wheelers fared poorly at that time. So, naturally most of them have recorded double-digit growth this time.
But, again shockingly, some have also recorded de-growth, which means they have performed better during pandemic peak than now.
The first up to record the de-growth was the Suzuki Access 125. But, it’s poor performance this time is owing to the introduction of the Avenis. Even after poor performance, it’s still among the top 10 sellers.
Secondly, 4 Hero 2-wheelers have recorded poorer numbers when compared to their pandemic performance. They are Glamour, Pleasure Plus, Passion Pro, and Destini. The first 3 have recorded double-digit de-growth. Destini took the destined last place.
Honda’s Dio too has recorded de-growth when compared to its pandemic performance but not by a huge margin. Its sales are still stable.
Other than these major developments, the chart almost remains the same as last month. But there are certain notable mentions.
Honda’s Shine and SP 125 have become the country’s second best sellers beating Hero’s HF series. Also, overall the 100-110 cc bikes have performed well. For example, Honda Dream CD 110, TVS Sport, and TVS Radeon have recorded excellent growth.
The Dream has recorded a massive 152 percent growth, nearly tripling its pandemic performance.
