2023 Toyota Yaris has been spotted on test, it’s built on Toyota’s popular DNGA platform and could get hybrid powertrains
The 2023 India-bound Toyota Yaris is set to make its global debut soon as the Japanese maker has started full-fledged testing of the sedan. Codenamed D92A, the model is likely to hit our shores by early next year making a strong proposition for itself.
First debuted in 2013, the Toyota Yaris, also called Yaris Ativ or Vios, was sold at many markets across the globe. India, however, got the 2016 facelift in 2018.
But, owing to the bizarre front looks and the lack of the diesel engine options (diesel played a major role before the current price rise), the car failed to make its name. By the time it was discontinued in 2021, it had sold just under 20,000 units.
After almost a year since its discontinuation in India, the next generation Toyota Yaris has been spotted testing in Thailand.
From the pictures of the test mule, the bizarre front looks have gone for good and the sedan now sports a mature and proportionate design language which most will love just like the upcoming Honda CR-V.
The front-end looks angular like the Volkswagen Vento with an inverted U-shaped grille. The triangular headlights have their edges merge into the curved-sides of the grille rendering a sporty look. The bonnet also gets a dual-strip lip that could house the brand logo.
The bonnet features 2 creases for a more muscular look upfront. There are subtle changes on the sides with prominent body lines now present. The design of the alloy wheels look similar to that of the Yaris that was sold in India.
At the rear, the body, again, looks angular and proportionate like the Vento with large tail-light clusters. The sedan could get LEDs all around.
On the inside, the car might come equipped as per the segment standards with connected tech, wireless charging, sunroof, ventilated seats, etc., making their way.
The upcoming car will be reportedly built on Toyota-Daihatsu’s popular DNGA platform that currently does duty on Toyota Raize and Daihatsu Rocky. The same platform is also expected to power Maruti Suzuki and Toyota’s upcoming Creta-rivalling SUVs.
It might share its mild and strong hybrid powertrains with that of the upcoming YFG and D22 SUVs and put up a fight against the likes of the Skoda Slavia, Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, the upcoming Volkswagen Virtus, etc.
It could be priced in the ballpark of Rs. 12-20 lakhs (ex-showroom).
