2022 Land Rover Range Rover Sport makes global debut driving through Karahnjukar dam’s spillway to its summit
Land Rover has unveiled the 2022 iteration of its popular Range Rover Sport luxury SUV.
The third generation model made its global debut by successfully completing the ascent of the 193 metre tall Icelandic Karahnjukar dam spillway against a torrent of water flowing at 750 tonnes per minute while also speeding through volcanic landscape, rocks, and flooded tunnels.
The new Range Rover Sport gets a reductive design approach with a muscular stance and taut surface. The luxury SUV’s designers claim it has the most advanced combination of chassis technologies ever fitted to a Land Rover.
On the inside, the new Range Rover Sport gets Land Rover’s Electrical Vehicle Architecture (EVA 2.0) that provides remote updates for 63 electronic modules. At the centre, a 13.1-inch floating display with haptic feedback features Pivi Pro infotainment system.
Controlling everything from navigation to media and vehicle settings, it learns the users’ habits and intelligently personalises the onboard experience. The updated Amazon Alexa2 now has the ability to control various settings using voice commands.
For the driver, there’s a 13.7-inch interactive display.
The luxury SUV gets a new cabin air purification system and Meridian Signature Sound System with 29 speakers. There are 4 headrest speakers to create personal sound zones for the cabin occupants.
The 2022 Range Rover Sport is based on Land Rover’s Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA-Flex) that includes a comprehensive dynamic toolkit and a suite of technologies governed by Land Rover’s Integrated Chassis Control system.
The SUV gets dynamic air suspension with switchable volume air springs, a first for a Range Rover, and twin-valve active dampers.
Customers can opt for the new dynamic master stormer handling pack that includes all-wheel steering, Dynamic ResponsePro, electronic active differential with torque vectoring by braking, and configurable programmes.
A host of powertrains are on offer – 3-litre inline 6 turbo with mild hybrid (400 PS 550 Nm), 4.4-litre V8 turbo (530 PS 750 Nm), 3-litre inline 6 turbo plug-in hybrid (440 PS 620 Nm), 3-litre inline 6 turbo plug-in hybrid (510 PS 700 Nm), 3-litre inline 6 diesel mild hybrid (300 PS 650 Nm), and 3-litre inline 6 diesel mild hybrid (350 PS 700 Nm).
A pure electric powertrain will be introduced in 2024.
The engines are mated to the company’s new Intelligent All-Wheel Drive (iAWD) gearbox. Adaptive off-road cruise control makes its debut on the new Range Rover Sport and drivers can select among 4 comfort settings.
The previous feats of the SUV include a record-setting hill-climb at Pikes Peak, a first recorded crossing of the Empty Quarter desert in the Arabian Peninsula, and a first ascent of the 999 steps to Heaven’s Gate in China, in 2018.
