April 2022 SUV sales turn out to be promising with many cars registering YoY growth
It was a sigh of relief for manufacturers as premium SUV sales in April 2022 saw growth with many offerings registering positive double-digit YoY percentages.
Coming first was, as usual, the Hyundai Creta which sold 12,651 units registering a slight growth of 2 percent. Though it came first in its segment, it’s no longer the country’s top-selling SUV as Tata Nexon has clinched that title.
Next up the list was Mahindra’s old workhorse, Bolero, which has witnessed a YoY growth of 25 percent selling over 7700 units. Kia Seltos came third but, this time, it couldn’t replicate last year’s sales. The numbers have gone down slightly.

Mahindra’s newest offering, the XUV 700 has taken the fourth place. Looking at the pace with which the SUV is selling, it could soon displace Seltos for the third spot.
Maruti Suzuki S-Cross has, surprisingly, done well this time securing over 3000 unit sales. Though it’s an underdog in the segment, sales are quite consistent in the last few months.
The biggest surprise was, however, from the Tata twins – Harrier and Safari which have posted impressive growth. Harrier, which came sixth, has witnessed 63 percent YoY growth while Safari, which came 11th has posted 37 percent growth.
Owing to the new Scorpio coming, the existing model has fared poorly this time with double-digit de-growth. Newbies Volkswagen Taigun, Hyundai Alcazar, and Skoda Kushaq have got their names in this list and they continue to sell well.
MG Hector has lost considerable numbers this time as the car is now over 3 years old and direly needs an update. Jeep Compass, MG Astor, and MG ZS EV claimed the last 3 places.

Coming to the entry-level luxury SUV segment, Toyota Fortuner comfortably lead the pack registering an impressive 2022 unit sales in April growing by 43 percent YoY. Surprisingly, Toyota Hilux too has jumped into the game registering good numbers.
The Toyotas were followed by the Volkswagen/Skoda twins – Tiguan and Kodiaq. MG Gloster has faced severe de-growth this time and the French maker Citroen’s C5 Aircross has neared its numbers.
Mahindra Alturas G4 and Hyundai Tucson took the last place selling 47 units each.
