Skoda has been testing a new sedan in India since a while now, and this sedan is part of the automaker’s India 2.0 Project. The vehicle’s name was expected to be Slavia and today, the Czech automaker has officially announced the name of the vehicle. The Skoda Slavia will be a replacement to the Rapid and it shares its underpinnings with the Kushaq.
The Skoda Slavia will be launched in India towards the end of this year and it’ll give direct competition to the likes of the Honda City and Hyundai Verna. It is expected to be positioned between Rs. 10-17 lakhs and will be offered with a choice of two powertrains – 1.0 TSI with either a 6-speed MT or 6-speed TC, and a 1.5 TSI with either a 6-speed MT or 7-speed DSG.
The 1.0-litre TSI engine is a 3-cylinder unit making 115 PS and 175 Nm on the Kushaq and the same tune is likely to be offered on the sedan as well. Meanwhile, the more powerful 1.5-litre TSI Evo engine is a 4-cyl unit that makes 150 PS and 250 Nm. This engine also powers the Karoq and T-Roc apart from the Kushaq and Taigun.
The Slavia name has some history to it too. Skoda’s founders Vaclav Laurin and Vaclav Klement used to repair bicycles and then they started designing new ones. These bicycles were marketed under the name Slavia in 1896.
