Upcoming MG electric cars will be positioned in the affordable end of the market

Upcoming MG electric cars will include a hatchback and a compact SUV and these affordable vehicles are expected to arrive after 2024.

MG Motor India is set to introduce the Astor soon. The company has also revealed that it will launch a sub-4-metre compact SUV by 2023-24, followed by a hatchback and an MPV.

During the same time frame, the firm will be developing affordable electric vehicles as well. MG had already stated that it will be introducing an electric compact SUV here in the next 2 years.

To cost under Rs. 20 lakhs (ex-showroom), the Tata Nexon EV rival will not be the only model without a tailpipe to be launched in India.

Keeping in mind the vacancy present in the affordable end of the electric vehicle market, MG has plans to launch a compact SUV and an electric hatchback based on the Baojun E200’s platform.

The E200 was showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo as a rebadged MG vehicle. The small 2-seat electric city runabout is 2.5 metres long, has a 39 HP motor, a claimed range of up to 270 km (NEDC) and its top speed is limited to 100 km/hr.

At the biennial event, the carmaker had said it would be looking to develop a 3- or 4-seat version of the E200 for India which will cost under Rs. 10 lakhs. It looks like MG is following up on its words now.

Nothing else is known about the upcoming MG electric cars other than the segment they will be competing in. Also, the SAIC, MG’s parent firm, is yet to green-light the project which is based on a minimum volume assumption of 20,000 EVs per annum.

But, what can be said is that the upcoming affordable electric cars from MG will have a smaller battery pack than the ZS EV (which has a 44.5 kWh pack) and should offer less range as a result.
