Dual Front Airbags
The airbags will need to meet the AIS 145 standard under the BIS specifications

The government has decided to wait till the end of 2021 to implement the dual front airbags rule in existing cars

The deadline for mandatory fitment of dual front airbags in existing cars has been extended by the government till 31st December 2021.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has extended the deadline in light of the ongoing pandemic and also because the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) asked for more time for implementation of the rule.

In December last year, the government notified a draft amendment with regard to modified safety norms which proposed that from 1st April 2021, new cars be fitted with dual front airbags as standard.

The mandate was based on suggestions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety

It added that all existing cars that come under the M1 category will have to comply with the regulation from 1st June of this year. Since 1st July 2019, all cars sold in India come with an airbag for the driver.

At present, some entry-level cars in India do not feature dual front airbags and equipping them with the airbags would improve the safety of occupants of such cars.
