To further boost electric vehicle (EV) adoption in India, the government has proposed waiver of registration fee for such automobiles.
Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has issued the draft notification for the same recently stating that this is to encourage e-mobility.
The draft rules state, “…battery operated vehicles…shall be exempted from the payment of fees for the purpose of issue or renewal of registration certificate and assignment of new registration mark.”
Comments have been sought by the Road Transport Ministry from stakeholders within 30 days in this regard.
This move by the Centre is in line with EV policies already framed by the governments of Delhi and Telangana under which, the Union Territory and the southern State waived EV registration fee and road tax, apart from announcing other incentives.
Further, the Centre has also approved a Rs. 18,000 crores production-linked incentive for creation of giga-factories in India.
It is to be seen if these policies lead to the nationwide adoption of electric vehicles in the coming years. However, improving charging infrastructure and bringing down cost of batteries, among other things, would also play a major role in that.
