BMW has added a convertible to its M4 Competition range for 2021. The model with the fabric-roof is equipped with 4-wheel-drive (M xDrive in BMW speak) to handle the 510 horses from its twin turbo straight-6 motor.
Well, as the name suggests, the 2021 BMW M4 Competition convertible looks exactly like the M4 below the waistline. Upfront, BMW has retained the vertical kidney grille which is flanked by the headlights at the top and air scoops at the bottom.
Along the sides, the 2-door performance car’s dynamically stretched silhouette is complemented by large alloy wheels (19 inches at the front and 20 inches at the back).
The tail section of the car is as aggressive-looking as the front fascia thanks to the wide track width, quad exhausts and diffuser. The interior is pretty much the same as the coupe M4 as well.
According to BMW, the soft top can be raised or stowed away in 18 seconds and while on the move. Also, the German brand says the car’s fabric-roof is 40 percent lighter than its predecessor’s roof.
Powering the 2021 BMW M4 Competition convertible is a twin turbo 3.0-litre in-line 6-cylinder engine putting out 510 HP at 6250 RPM and 650 Nm of torque between 2750 and 5500 RPM.
An 8-speed M Steptronic transmission send the motor’s power to all 4 wheels, which enables the car to do the 0–100 km/hr sprint in 3.7 seconds and hit a top speed of 280 km/hr (with the optional M Driver’s pack)
Due to new age electronics, the driver can disengage drive to the front axle and use the M4 Competition convertible as a pure rear-wheel drive vehicle by deactivating the stability control system.
Being a performance model, the convertible M4 competition gets its own chassis setup, adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers, M Servotronic steering with variable ratio, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, among others.
BMW has added a package of bracing elements in the car, with torsion struts added at the rear for this particular model to regain some of the stiffness lost due to lopping the roof off.
Furthermore, customers have the option to choose the M Race Track Package which reduces weight by around 25 kg with features such as carbon ceramic brakes, light-alloy wheels and carbon bucket seats.
Overseas launch of the 2021 BMW M4 Competition convertible will take place after the start of production in July 2021.
