A new base variant of the Mahindra Thar is likely under development and the model is rumoured to be powered by a 1.5-litre diesel engine.
The second-generation Thar has been a runaway success for Mahindra, with demand far exceeding supply for months together.
Mahindra seems to want to capitalise on the popularity that the Thar enjoys and is reportedly working on a new, more affordable variant of the of the compact off-roader.
This new Mahindra Thar base variant is expected to come with a 1.5-litre diesel engine and with both manual and automatic gearbox options.
However, 4-wheel drive will not be available in the new base variant and as a result, and due to certain other changes, the new entry-level variant could very well be about 100 kg lighter than the 4-wheel drive models.
Mahindra is not expected to change the styling of the SUV in any way, but, the Mahindra Thar base variant will come with smaller wheels.
Due to the smaller engine and reduced weight, the new variant is expected to be more fuel efficient than the current model as well.
It goes without saying that the new base variant will cost less than the current entry-level AX(O) variant that is priced at Rs. 12.11 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi).
