Toyota is said to be looking to stop the sales of the Yaris C-segment sedan in India due to it not selling well in the market.
Launched back in 2018, the sedan was pitched against the likes of the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, Skoda Rapid, among others.
In March 2021, Toyota retailed only 871 units if the Yaris, even as 2778 units of the Hyundai Verna got sold in India during the same period.
To put this into perspective, Toyota sold 2989 units of the Glanza, 3162 units of the Urban Cruiser, both of which are rebadged Maruti Suzuki products, in March.
What’s more, even the Innova Crysta premium MPV fetched 5743 unit sales, while 2136 units of the Fortuner got sold during last month.
According to a Toyota spokesperson, the brand is continuously studying and evaluating the market to understand the “everchanging needs, customer preferences and trend”.
While facing stiff competition from segment leaders Honda City and Hyundai Verna, the Yaris also was caught in the wake of the booming compact SUV segment.
As such, Toyota Yaris sales tanked and soon the carmaker might phase the model, produced at the second plant of Toyota at Bidadi, out and concentrate on the compact SUV segment.
In association with Maruti Suzuki, Toyota is developing a Hyundai Creta rival which will be manufactured at Bidadi. The car will make use of Maruti’s powertrain and is expected to be launched in 2022.
