In order to be eligible to clear the driving licence test in India, an individual should score 69 percent, which is the fixed passing percentage for the test, or above, the Parliament was informed recently.
Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari, in a written reply, revealed the above on Thursday and also added that people would now be required to pass a set of strict skill tests to obtain their driving licence.
These parameters have been set as per provisions of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989. It was also informed that the objective of conducting driving skill test is to produce qualified drivers.
The skill test would also require a person to (in the case of a vehicle having reverse gear) drive an automobile backwards and reverse it into a limited opening with reasonable accuracy, stated the Union minister.
Gadkari also said that before the actual driving licence skill test begins, a demonstration is shown on an LED screen installed in all Automated Driving Test Tracks (ADTTs), along with a live demonstration at the test track.
At the time of booking the appointment for driving licence test, the applicant is also provided with a video link for the skill test demo, Gadkari added.
Moreover, in another written reply, the Union Road Transport minister stated that certain Regional Transport Office (RTO) services have been made completely online.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had earlier this month notified the public about the online services (read article here) that can be availed of on a voluntary basis using Aadhaar authentication.
According to Gadkari, this move was taken to help the citizenry avail of the 18 listed services including getting the learner’s licence, duplicate driving licence, submitting notice of transfer of ownership, among others, with ease.
In addition, it is also expected to reduce the footfall in RTOs and thus, in turn, increase the efficiency of the officers.
Finally, Nitin Gadkari mentioned that a person can renew the driving licence in the time period between 1 year before its expiry till one year after its expiry.
