The Hyundai IONIQ 5 has been revealed today and the midsize CUV is the first model to make its debut under new IONIQ brand dedicated to battery electric vehicles (BEV).
Built upon the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the IONIQ 5 evokes the styling of the Hyundai Pony, the firm’s first production car. Upfront, there is a clamshell hood (first for Hyundai), LED headlights below which sits the V-shaped DRLS, and a simple lower bumper design.
Along the sides, the EV has strong character lines, a relatively small glass area, flush door handles, a thick C-pillar and stylish 20-inch wheels.
At the rear, the tail lights mimic the ones in the front and the same V-shaped cluster appears here too. Once again, the bumper is small and a roof spoiler is present as well.
Overall, the car is 4635 mm long, 1890 mm wide, 1605 mm tall and has a 3000 mm wheelbase. Customers can choose from 9 exterior colours that are on offer.
Inside, the car has a large sunroof, a configurable, dual cockpit featuring a 12-inch infotainment screen and a hoodless 12-inch digital instrument cluster. Also, for the first time in a Hyundai, there is an Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR HUD).
Further, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 comes with electronically adjustable front seats, a moveable centre console, and the carmaker says it has used eco-friendly materials for the seats, headliner, door trim, floor and armrest.
Rear boot space is ample at 531 litres, while there is also a front trunk with 57 litres of space for the 2-wheel-drive (2WD) variant or 24 litres for the all-wheel-drive (AWD) model. Also, there are 3 interior colour options on offer.
As mentioned above, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 comes in 2WD (rear wheels are driven) and AWD versions and both can be had in standard range (58 kWh battery) or long range (72.6 kWh battery) trims.
The standard range 2WD model has 125 kW (168 HP) and 350 Nm and can do the 0-100 km/hr sprint in 8.5 seconds, while the AWD version has 173 kW (232 HP) and 605 Nm and can crack the 0-100 km/hr run in 6.1 seconds.
But, the long range model does even better, for it has 160 kW (214.5 HP) and 350 Nm and runs the 0-100 km/hr sprint in 7.4 seconds in 2WD form, while with all 4 wheels powered, it smashes the 0-100 km/hr run in 5.2 seconds, since it has 225 kW (302 HP) and 605 Nm.
However, despite not being as fast, the maximum driving range of 470-480 km (WLTP) is achieved by the 2WD model with the larger battery. Top speed for all models is rated at 185 km/hr.
Moreover, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 can support both 400 V and 800 V charging infrastructures without the need for additional adapters. With a 350 kW charger, the EV’s battery pack can be charged from 10-80 percent in 18 minutes, while 5 minutes of charging will add 100 km to the range.
IONIQ 5 also provides a V2L function, which allows customers to use their car as a power source that can even charge electric bicycles for it can supply up to 3.6 kW of power.
As is the case with modern vehicles, the IONIQ 5, which will be available in select regions from the first half of this year, comes with loads of advanced driver assistance systems and safety tech.
Following the launch of IONIQ 5, Hyundai will expand its BEV lineup with IONIQ 6, an electric sedan, and IONIQ 7, a large electric SUV.
