Tata launched the Harrier in the year 2019. The Tata Harrier was first showcased as the H5X concept at the 2018 Auto Expo. The Harrier is a landmark product and was the first Tata car using the Land Rover platform. The Tata Harrier is based on Land Rover’s D8 architecture, which underpins the Discovery Sport as well. This monocoque platform is termed as OMEGA Arc (Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced Architecture) by Tata Motors.
Pros – Powerful Diesel Engine, Premium Interiors, Good Ride Quality
Cons – Heavy Steering At Low Speeds, Brake Pedal Feel, No 4×4 Option
Tata Harrier Exteriors
The Harrier is one of the most striking SUV out there. The styling of the Harrier makes heads turn on the road. With its high set bonnet, the Harrier has a good road presence. Upfront, the Harrier gets a split headlamp setup. The blade-like designed LED DRLs at the top seamlessly flow into the grille and double up as an indicator too. The main headlight sets below the LED DRLs and it gets a Xenon HID projector setup, which helps in illuminating the road at night very well. From the side, the Harrier gets large wheel arches for the bulky look. The window line gently rises and merges into the blacked-out D-pillar, which gives it a kind of floating roof appeal. The 17-inch dual-tone diamond-cut alloy wheels look nice. However, 18-inchers would have been a pleasant touch to the car. From the rear, the Harrier looks elegant. The taillights are connected by a glossy black strip. You also get a rear skid plate with fake exhaust outlets.
Apart from the regular variants, the Harrier is available in two special editions: one is the Dark Edition, and the other one is the CAMO Edition. The Dark Edition of the Harrier features an all-black theme inside and outside. Unique to the Dark edition of the Harrier are the Atlas Black exterior paint, darkened elements, darkened headlights, a ‘#Dark’ badge on the front fender, and blacked-out alloy wheels. Talking out the CAMO Edition, the Harrier comes painted with Olive Green colour on the exterior, blacked-out wheels, and a CAMO badge on the front fender. With the accessory package, the buyers of the CAMO Edition can get Harrier lettering on the bonnet, a side step, front parking sensors, and special CAMO decals on the roof, hood, and doors.
Tata Harrier Interior
Once you step inside the Cabin of the Harrier, it feels plush and premium. The interior gets an oak brown theme and looks refreshing than the usual black and beige treatment. The dashboard design is simple, yet it looks elegant. The use of faux wood on the middle part of the dash looks premium. The free-standing 8.8-inch touchscreen comes coupled with the central AC vents. The Harrier comes with a 9-speaker JBL music system paired with an amplifier and a subwoofer, which results in great sound quality. The infotainment supports Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Navigation, Voice Commands, Bluetooth, USB & AUX connectivity. The major flaw with the infotainment screen is that it occupies the controls of the AC and other controls on both sides of the screen, so whenever you are using Apple CarPlay or Android Auto the UI becomes tiny and sometimes it becomes difficult to operate. The instrument cluster is a semi-digital unit with a 7-inch TFT screen, which displays most of the info regarding the car.
Other features include a panoramic sunroof, auto headlamps, and wipers, keyless entry with push-button start/stop, auto-dimming IVRM, 6-way power-adjustable driver seat, and many more.
On the Black Edition of the Harrier, the interior gets an all-black theme with Blackstone Matrix trim on the dash instead of standard wooden inserts. On the CAMO edition, the interior gets an all-black theme, like the Dark Edition. The change here is it comes with a contrast CAMO green stitching on the seats.
Tata Harrier Space
The front seats of the Harrier are comfortable and supportive. However, because of excessive lumbar support on the lower back, it might feel uncomfortable sometimes. The rear seats are well-cushioned, and the bench is wide enough to fit in three people comfortably. You get an ample amount of legroom, and under-thigh support is also good.
Tata Harrier Engine Performance
The Harrier comes with a single Fiat-sourced engine option that is a 2.0-litre Kryotec, 4-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine which churns out 170 HP at 3750 RPM and a torque output of 350 Nm at 1750-2500 RPM. The engine comes mated with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed Hyundai sourced automatic transmission. NVH levels of the car have been well contained. However, you hear the road noise and feel the vibrations through the steering wheel, pedals, and gear lever. The turbo-lag is well contained and you can feel a sudden burst of torque past 1800 RPM. The best rev range to drive is between 1800-3500 RPM. Past 3000 RPM you can hear a lot from the engine, and you will tend to upshift to keep the engine at lower revs. There are three driving modes on offer – Eco, City, and Sport. The Sport mode offers better drivability when compared to the other two modes. The 6-speed manual gearbox is easy to use, but isn’t the slickest and feels snatchy sometimes. The Hyundai-sourced 6-speed automatic transmission feels nicely integrated with the engine. The transmission works seamlessly and smoothly with the light throttle inputs. The gearbox is best suited for the city. When you put down your foot hard on the accelerator, it takes its own sweet time to shift the gears.
Tata Harrier Mileage
The Tata Harrier has an ARAI rated fuel efficiency of 16.35 km/l for the manual transmission and 14.63 km/l for the automatic transmission. In real-world conditions, you can expect anywhere between 10-12 km/l in city traffic and 13-15 km/l on highways for the manual transmission. In the case of the automatic, the range lies between 8-10 km/l in city traffic and 11-13 km/l on the highways. However, fuel efficiency depends on driving conditions, traffic conditions, and other such external factors.
Tata Harrier Handling
The hydraulically assisted power steering is heavy and piloting this car in city traffic might be a task. Out on the highways, the Harrier feels more planted and gives you a sense of robustness around the corners. The brakes could have a better feel, and the excessive brake pedal travel isn’t great.
Tata Harrier Comfort
Bad roads and potholes are a piece of cake for the Harrier. The suspension is slightly tuned on the stiffer side. You can feel some movement on the sharp bumps, but it does its job quite well. The Harrier feels composed at high speeds.
Tata Harrier Safety
The Harrier is built on the OMEGA Arc platform, which uses lightweight and high tensile strength materials for structural rigidity. The build of the Harrier is quite impressive and feels robust. In terms of safety equipment the Harrier comes with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, electronic stability program (ESP), hill hold control, traction control, corner stability control, brake disc wiping, central locking, alarm system, and roll-over mitigation control as standard. In higher trims, you get six airbags, hill descent control, off-road ABS, and ISOFIX child seat mounts.
Tata Harrier Service
Tata has a wide network of service centres across India. Tata’s after-sales service is quite impressive, and Tata cars come with a hassle-free ownership experience.
