Mahindra seems to be working on a removable hardtop variant of the 2021 Thar as it continues to test its very popular compact off-road SUV.
A test mule spotted recently in Chennai had a different hardtop to the hardtop model on sale at present and the mounts on the rear windshield are different as well. Also, the grille section was camouflaged, denoting that it might be changed.
At present, the 2021 Mahindra Thar can be had either with a soft top or a hardtop. Although the hardtop of the Thar can be removed, doing so will void the warranty and even though it can be attached back, it might not be as watertight.
In the case of a soft top, users have found it to flap excessively at high speeds, taking some of the fun away. Such issues can be alleviated by using a removable hardtop, for it will offer the best of both worlds.
No mechanical changes are expected to be made to the Thar and thus the 2.0-litre turbo petrol, 2.2-litre turbo diesel and the 2 gearbox options will be retained. That said, Mahindra is working on a more powerful version of the petrol motor which might get introduced soon.
There is no official word about the upcoming 2021 Mahindra Thar removable hardtop variant for now. But, given that it is the hardtop variants that currently have a longer waiting period, the carmaker might introduce the new variant soon.
For now though, Mahindra is concentrating on fulfilling the massive amount of orders it has for the Thar. In many cities, the waiting period is reportedly up to 38 weeks for the compact off-road vehicle.
