Toll Booths In Country To Be Made Redundant In 2 Years' Time

Toll booths in the country will likely be made redundant in 2 years’ time as the toll collection system will be made GPS-based.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, on Thursday, revealed that the government has finalised GPS-based toll collection system to ensure seamless movement of vehicles across the nation.

This system has been accepted with help from the Russian government, he revealed, adding that this will ensure that the country becomes toll booth-free in 2 years.

Recently, the government had also announced that cash payment at toll booths will be replaced entirely by pre-paid cards.

Gadkari noted that through the GPS system, the toll amount will be deducted directly from the bank account (of the user) based on the movement of a vehicle.

According to the minister, the overall toll income of the country is expected to reach Rs. 34,000 crores by March next year. By using the GPS-based toll collection system, toll income is likely to rise to Rs. 1.34 lakh crores, he informed.

Further, he said, the government will come up with some plan to instal GPS tech in old vehicles. At present, commercial vehicles are coming with vehicle tracking systems.
