BMW has launched the 2-Series Gran Coupe and reasons to buy the small BMW are many, although some would argue against it vehemently.
Priced from Rs. 39.30 lakhs (ex-showroom), the car sure is not cheap by any means. However, it does come packed with features and has a strong powertrain as well.
For those who want their first BMW or those who wish to gift a BMW to their spouse or child, the 2-Series Gran Coupe would be an option to consider. But, there are a few irritable foibles that we would like to mention.
Power – There’s enough of it actually. The 2.0-litre litre engine with 2-stage turbocharging puts out 190 HP and 400 Nm, which is good enough to propel the car to 100 km/hr in 7.5 seconds with a top speed of 233 km/hr, which is much…much more than our national speed limit.
Features – There are two 10.25-inch screens, one for the driver and the other for the infotainment that comes with several connected tech features, gesture control, head-up display, sunroof, all-LED lighting, parking assist, reverse assist and more.
Handling – Being a BMW, one would seldom have to doubt the capabilities of the 2-Series Gran Coupe. Nonetheless, the car has what the firm calls ARB tech to reduce understeer and it works in combination with DSC. Suffice it to say, the car has positive handling characteristics.
Quality – This is one big point in the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe reasons to buy list. For the money, one can be rest assured that the car will be built to last. Also, the quality of the materials used is top-notch. So, nothing to worry here.
Styling – I had recently mentioned about it to my colleague and he agreed with me that the styling is a bit odd. For sure, styling is debatable. But, this small Gran Coupe is not a looker. Trying to shrink a big RWD car’s design to a FWD model has not worked as much as BMW would have hoped.
Space – There are plenty of cars from other manufacturers that have more space inside that can be purchased for less than the 2-Series. It is a sure negative point and the sloping roofline does not help matters either.
Frameless doors – We like frameless doors, for they are cool to look at. But, for some reason, BMW decided that the windows have to go down more than they need to when the doors are opened or closed and that is another mark against it, for that is odd.
Price – As mentioned before, for those looking to buy a car in this price range, the Gran Coupe might not appeal due to the price. Even BMW’s sublime 3-Series costs only a bit more than the M Sport 220d and why would one not go with the bigger car?
