Mahindra is said to be considering launching a 5-door variant of the Thar off-road SUV, which would become the first time the car gets such a body style.
Ever since its 2010 launch, the SUV has been offered only in 3-door form and even the 2021 Thar that is due to be launched on 2nd October, will be introduced as a 3-door variant only.
Offering the car in a more practical 5-door variant, with more interior space (as the wheelbase is likely to be stretched) might well bring in more customers who might have avoided the car so far.
It is also evident that Mahindra will alter the 2021 Thar’s Gen3 chassis so as to keep the off-road-oriented vehicle’s basics intact. However, we cannot divulge into any details about the car’s off-road abilities staying the same at the moment.
Powertrain options on the Mahindra Thar 5-door variant will likely mirror those of the 3-door Thar. Thus, it will get the 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder mStallion petrol engine good for 150 HP and 320 Nm and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel that makes 130 BHP and 300 Nm.
The engines are mated to a 6-speed manual or for those who dislike shifting gears, there is a 6-speed automatic gearbox as well.
Reports state that the 3-door SUV will likely be priced between Rs. 9.5 lakhs and Rs. 15 lakhs (both prices ex-showroom) when it gets launched. Decidedly, the variant with more doors will likely demand a premium.
