The SUV craze is seemingly getting bigger with each passing year and Maruti, with all its might, is readying up a product offensive. Three upcoming Maruti cars are likely to be launched in three successive years, starting from 2021.
India’s top automaker has its sight set on the SUV segment and has noted that SUVs have been in good demand for quite a while now.
Maruti knows that today close to 30 percent of the cars sold in India are of the body type. About eight years ago, SUVs accounted for just eight percent of the total market.
Thus, of the three planned upcoming Maruti cars, two will be SUVs and the first would be the 5-door Jimny, the spiritual successor to the famous Gypsy.
It will hit showrooms next year and through the premium Nexa channel that recently concluded five years in the market, selling over 11 lakh cars. The two other cars (mentioned below) will also be sold through the same upmarket outlets.
Bringing the Jimny would be feasible because Maruti is a global player with multiple product platforms under its belt. Another ace up its sleeve is its partnership with Toyota.
Two of the upcoming Maruti cars will make use of Toyota platforms. The first would use the platform of the Toyota Raize, which in itself is a re-engineered Daihatsu Rocky.
This midsize SUV will rival the Korean sister cars – the Hyundai Creta and the Kia Seltos, will sit above the XL6 and will likely be up for sale come 2022.
Finally, an MPV that will rival the Innova will also come to the market using Toyota’s C-MPV (B560) platform. It will be a 7-seater premium offering which will be launched in 2023.
