Maruti Suzuki yet again leads the hatchback segment in terms of sales.
The hatchback segment largely attracts the price-sensitive buyers of India. We have all types of hatchbacks in our market, such as entry-level hatchbacks, compact hatchbacks and premium hatchbacks. As usual Maruti Suzuki has been the leader in all 3 divisions for another month.
It’s no surprise that the Maruti Alto is at the top spot with 17,921 units sales. The Maruti S-Presso is positioned just below the Alto. The S-Presso registered sales of 9578 units, which, if compared to last months sales, is a 2600 unit rise. Third, on the list is the Renault Kwid with 4187 units and a negative 17% YoY growth. The Kwid sold less than half of what the Maruti S-Presso sold. Datsun managed to sell 513 units of redi-Go with a degrowth of -60%. Overall, the entry hatchback division recorded a positive 4% growth.
The compact hatchback division has the most products on offer in the hatchback segment. While the YoY of January 2020 was -14%, in February 2020, the damage is less at mere -1%. Just like last month, the Maruti Swift continues to be the top-selling product after selling 18,696 units in February 2020. It also has a positive YoY figure at 3% followed by 16% scored by the Maruti WagonR at the 2nd position. The Ford Figo continues to show astonishing growth with 93% on its report card. The Maruti Ignis shows the highest growth at 123% while Toyota Liva shows the steepest decline at -100%.
Meanwhile, the premium hatchback division is going down with an overall decline of -4%. The Maruti Suzuki Baleno and the Hyundai Elite i20 gathered 16,585 and 8766 unit sales, respectively. The Honda Jazz suffered the steepest decline with -100%. However, the Ford Freestyle had a -9% degrowth with 1004 unit sales. The Jazz isn’t likely to be upgraded to BS6 norms while Hyundai is gearing up to launch the new generation i20 which is why sales of the current model are down.
Cumulatively, the premium hatchback division observed a negative 4% growth. The premium hatchback division is the only division which showed negative YoY amongst others in the hatchback segment.
