For Indian customers, efficiency matters the most. Especially in the sedan segment, major talking points are power, style and fuel efficiency. The premium sedan division is the only division from the sedan segment to show an improvement out of the four – Compact sedans, executive sedans, premium sedans and luxury sedans.
Discussing compact sedans first, as usual, Maruti Suzuki is at the top with the Swift Dzire selling in huge numbers just like every month. The Honda Amaze is an inconsistent performer with sales fluctuating every month. Both Maruti Dzire and Honda Amaze experienced a negative 9% YoY growth. Tata Tigor and Hyundai Xcent sold 1487 and 1139 units, respectively. Tata Zest, Volkswagen Ameo and Ford Aspire could not reach a four-digit figure in terms of sales.
Maruti surely has a magic wand, as, yet another month and the Maruti Dzire has sold just a few units less than the double of what all other sedans sold collectively.
In the executive sedan segment, from the last few months, it has been a juggle between the Honda City and the Maruti Ciaz for the top spot. This time around, Maruti Ciaz has gained the top spot by selling 427 units more than the Skoda Rapid. Meanwhile, the City has dropped to the fourth spot selling 70% fewer units than in December 2018. Nissan Sunny has gained a positive 31% growth whereas the Fiat Linea sold absolutely no units in December 2019.
Coming to the premium sedan segment, the topper here is the Skoda Octavia. The Octavia sold 255 units, a 31% rise from December 2018 sales. Second is the Honda Civic which sold 178 units. Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla sold 23 and 9 units respectively with the Corolla observing a negative 95% YoY growth. Cumulatively, the segment experienced a positive 9% growth.
As we stray further down to the luxury sedan category, Skoda flourished in this segment as well. The Skoda sold 159 units of the Superb. Toyota Camry sold 40 units in December 2019, whereas it sold 0 units in December 2018. Volkswagen Passat and Honda Accord sold no units. Volkswagen Passat observed a 100% degrowth. Altogether, the segment recorded a negative 5% growth.
