Maruti Suzuki has topped all three divisions of the hatchback segment.
The hatchback segment largely attracts the price-sensitive buyers of India. We have all types of hatchbacks in our market, such as entry-level hatchbacks, compact hatchbacks and premium hatchbacks. As usual Maruti Suzuki has been the leader in all 3 divisions for another month.
Let us have a look at the entry-level hatchbacks first. The Maruti Suzuki Alto tops the entry-level hatchback list. Though it sold 38% lesser units than December 2018, its sales grew in respect to November 2019 which stood at 15,086 units. The recently launched S-Presso seems to be a hit as it has garnered a staggering 8394 units in sales. However, it still remains behind its sibling, the Alto, which has been the entry hatchback segment leader for the majority of the year.
The Renault Kwid has suffered a -5% YoY, selling only 5539 units while it sold 5832 units in December 2018. Datsun managed to sell 1380 units of Redi-GO with a 24% sales increase from last year. The Tata Nano and the Hyundai Eon have failed to sell even a single unit.
While the entry-level hatchback segment recorded a 5% negative growth, Datsun Redi-GO was the only one to gain a positive YoY growth.
Coming to the next segment, which is the compact hatchback segment, it is the Maruti Swift which holds the crown. The Maruti Swift sold 14,749 units with a 25% positive growth. Next up is the car which recently celebrated its two-decade existence in the market, the Wagon R. It has a 324% YoY growth as the third generation was introduced in 2019. The Hyundai Grand i10 is third on the list selling 7598 units while Tata Tiago is fifth with 4558 units being sold, compared to 5628 units in December 2018.
The premium hatchback segment is the only division that recorded a positive growth of 14% while the other two managed to record -4% and -7% respectively. Maruti Baleno has topped the list with a 66% growth in the sales selling 18,464 units. The Hyundai i20 experienced a negative 35% YoY growth. Volkswagen Polo sold 2210 units in December 2019 whereas it sold 1394 units in December 2018. The Ford Freestyle continues to degrow as it sold just 296 units with a major 79% negative decline.
