Maruti Suzuki will be entering the midsize SUV segment to compete with Creta and Seltos.
With the latest trend of UVs, specially compact SUVs in the Indian market, the hatchback segment is getting some heat. Maruti Suzuki believes UVs are the future and with their latest alliance with Toyota, the carmaker is developing a new SUV and MPV for the Indian market.
India’s largest carmaker is considering to introduce a new midsize SUV for the country. It will compete against the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. Expected to be having the same size, the new Maruti SUV is being planned to launch in 2022.
The upcoming SUV will be based on the current Vitara Brezza architecture. It will be manufactured in Toyota’s factory in Bidadi, Karnataka.
Unlike the rebadged version of Baleno, Ciaz and Ertiga planned with Toyota, the new SUV will have distinct characteristics for both Maruti Suzuki and Toyota.
Maruti could’ve introduced the international spec Vitara to compete in the midsize segment but seems like it is not viable for the market. Hence, they are developing a new SUV with Toyota specifically for India.
Maruti believes, their existing small car owners will be upgrading to bigger cars and specially UVs in the near future. The carmaker is focusing big on this midsize SUV and new MUV to retain their 50 percent market share in the Indian market.
