NGT fines VW Rs. 500 crores for the emissions scandal, but the company maintains that all their vehicles were compliant with the norms.
After the infamous dieselgate scandal broke out, governments of a lot of countries fined Volkswagen for the fraud. The EA189 diesel engine is also found in a lot of cars available on sale in India and now the National Green Tribunal has fined Volkswagen to the tune of Rs. 500 crores.
The German automaker has been asked to deposit the amount within 2 months. Earlier, in November 2018, Volkswagen was asked to deposit Rs. 100 crores with the Central Pollution Control Board. However, in January 2019, officials from the CPCB, Ministry of Heavy Industries, ARAI and National Environment Engineering Research Institute recommended a fine of Rs. 171.34 crores for health damages and for causing pollution.
Volkswagen has sent out an official communication where they’ve responded to the NGT’s order. The company has stated that all their vehicles are compliant with the emission norms defined in India and the Volkswagen Group will challenge this order before the Honourable Supreme Court.
