Mahindra will use the Ford platform to develop its EVs as the companies have agreed on joint development.
Mahindra plans to develop a variety of electric vehicles in the long run but as of now the automaker is working to upgrade its current vehicles to meet the upcoming emission and safety norms. Mahindra has plans of launching electric versions of the KUV100 and XUV300 but the company isn’t betting big on personal use of EVs.
To throw light on the matter, a company official commented that they would convert their current platforms to electric as this will take lesser time than complete development. After the electric Verito, an e-version of their KUV and XUV300 is expected to be launched in a year’s time. The company also aims at development from scratch at a later stage.
The EV-only platform is quite a challenge currently as its needs a lot of investment. Vehicle manufacturers have been exploring opportunities and slowly developing several products. However, the electric space in India is still to gain a lot of momentum, both on personal and shared mobility systems. The automaker is likely to launch 2 versions of the XUV300 electric, one for personal use and one for shared mobility.
Mahindra says it will convert its current platforms at EVs at a later stage and cater to both commercial and personal segments. The company is also working with Ford and SsangYong trying to make the maximum out of their ventures of joint development. Thus, there could be a lot of things in common including shared platforms. Mahindra wants to focus on fully electric vehicles only and the company wants to launch at least 1 EV based on a Ford platform.
