The Tata Harrier and H7X are likely to get a 1.6-litre petrol engine derived from the 1.2 turbo petrol unit.
Tata Motors recently launched the Harrier and the SUV is currently offered with only a 2.0-litre diesel engine that has been sourced from FCA. The automaker is all set to reveal the production version of the H7X at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.
The H7X will also use the same diesel engine as the Harrier but in a higher state of tune. Tata Motors is also looking to introduce petrol variants of these SUVs and it is likely that the company will introduce 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engines in both the SUVs.
Tata Motors will either have to develop an engine in-house or source one from some other company. The company already has a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, turbo petrol engine in its kitty. Adding 1 more cylinder will make it a 1.6-litre unit and company officials have said that they have considered this because it actually becomes a modular design architecture. There was an option of using JLR’s Ingenium engine but that would be a costly proposition.
The new engine’s specs aren’t known yet, but Tata will launch the petrol variants in the future. Apart from this, the company is also set to introduce the automatic version of the Harrier which will get a 6-speed torque converter unit from Hyundai. The H7X will also come with the same automatic gearbox.
