Second-generation Mahindra XUV500 will be based on all-new monocoque platform.
Mahindra has started working on the second-generation of its hugely successful XUV500 SUV. Just like the current model, the new Mahindra XUV500 will be based on a monocoque construction but the platform will be all-new, shared with SsangYong. The new XUV500 will replace the current model which has been updated multiple times since its launch in 2011.
When the XUV500 was launched in 2011, it stood out for its styling. The second-generation model will feature a clean-sheet design language that will make the new XUV500 standout once again. Mahindra will use its now available expertise from the company’s North American Technical Centre, located in Michigan, USA and from the Italian design house Pininfarina. The new XUV500 will be larger on the outside and roomier on the inside. The increased dimensions of the car will be focussed to liberate more space in the third-row.
The interior will also receive major updates. More equipment, better quality materials, a radical design, focus on connectivity and enhanced comfort can be expected. Mahindra is likely to offer high levels of safety tech with the new XUV500.
A new 2.0-litre diesel engine will power the second-generation XUV500. It is believed that the new motor will produce 180 BHP, a whopping 25 BHP more from the current car’s 2.2-litre diesel engine. The new powerplant will comply with BS6 emission norms. The engine will be mated to both manual and automatic transmissions and Mahindra will offer a 4WD system.
When the new XUV500 makes its debut towards the end of 2020, it will face some really stiff competition. Hyundai is developing a 7-seater version of the next-generation Creta and it will be the chief competitor to the new XUV500. Additionally, the new XUV500 will go against some 5-seater rivals like the Kia SP-Concept based SUV, MG Motor’s Hector, the Volkswagen T-Cross and Skoda’s Vision-X based SUV which are all expected to be launched by then.
In March 2018, Mahindra and Ford formed an alliance to co-develop new SUVs. This new alliance may spawn an all-new SUV from Ford, based on the new XUV500.
