The new Speed Twin is inspired by the Speed Twin motorcycle from Triumph which was produced in 1938.
Triumph Motorcycles has unveiled another new motorcycle, inspired by the motorbiking legacy of the company. The 2019 Triumph Speed Twin, which has been added to the company’s modern classic range, will bring with it the performance of the Triumph Thruxton R cafe racer and the easy accessibility of the Bonneville T120. A part of the Triumph Bonneville family, the bike will house the same 1200cc Bonneville “high power” engine which is also used by the Thruxton R. The engine has a capacity of generating 94.6 HP power and a peak torque of 112 Nm.
The bike from which the new model is inspired was first produced in 1938. Famous for its power and handling, it used a 500cc parallel-twin engine until its production was stopped in 1966. The new bike gets an engine with more than twice the size in displacement while also ensuring that it will be a sporty vehicle. The bike has casual ergonomics like the Bonneville T120 and weighs in at 196 kgs, which is 10 kgs lighter than the Thruxton R.
The engine is made out of lighter components, which also accounts for the drop in weight. 2.5 kgs of weight is saved in the engine alone by using magnesium cam covers, aluminium swing arm, new clutch assembly, optimised engine covers, among other changes.
The seat height of 807 mm will be comfortable for use by short riders. The frame is built upon the Thruxton R’s base with changes to match the Speed Twin’s specifications. It is suspended by a KYB telescopic front fork and twin KYB rear shocks with adjustable preload. Brembo 4-piston calipers gripping the 305 mm front disc take care of the braking for the front wheel and the rear wheel has a single Nissin floating caliper gripping onto a single 220 mm disc.
ABS and traction control are offered as standard. 17-inch, seven-spoke cast aluminium wheels are used with Pirelli Rosso Corsa III tyres. Three riding modes are provided by the ride-by-wire throttle – Rain, Road and Sport. These can be adjusted on the go and the changes to throttle response and traction control intervention are automatically made.
The Triumph Speed Twin is expected to be launched in India by mid-2019. A price tag of Rs. 10-11 lakhs is expected to come along with it.
