The mild hybrid system with the dual-battery setup and Heartect platform will show significant fuel efficiency numbers
Maruti Suzuki has been in the news currently with the launch of second gen Ertiga scheduled for November 21, 2018. The new Ertiga will replace the older one and comes with many new upgrades.
Two engine options for the MPV will be available – a 1.3-litre diesel engine and a new 1.5-litre petrol engine. With the incorporation of the Smart Hybrid Vehicle System (SHVS) technology, both variants promise high fuel efficiency.
The petrol variant of the Ertiga will be entering the market with the SHVS technology for the first time. The MPV will get a dual-battery setup, which is similar to the one seen on the new Ciaz.
While the conventional lead-acid battery will focus on powering the vehicle and the idle start-stop tech, the added lithium-ion battery will be used for torque assist.
This second battery will be located under the front passenger seat. The Ertiga diesel variant however, will run on the same single battery set-up for the SHVS system like its predecessor.
The new Heartect platform on which the Ertiga is based will make the MPV about 10-20 kgs lighter than its predecessor. This further boosts the vehicle’s fuel economy numbers. The weight difference is more noticeable with the heaviest versions of the Ertiga models.
The older Ertiga has a kerb weight of 1185 kgs for the petrol vehicle and 1265 kgs for the diesel vehicle. The new Ertiga weighs 1170 kgs for the petrol variant and 1245 kgs for the diesel variant.
With the combination of these factors, the new Ertiga petrol is able to give a mileage of 19.34 km/l and 18.69 km/l for manual and automatic transmissions, respectively. This is a good improvement from the previous Ertiga’s petrol car’s mileage of 17.50 km/l for the manual and 17.03 km/l for the automatic.
The new Ertiga diesel also shows an increase in mileage as it returns 25.47 km/l over the 24.52 km/l of the first-gen Ertiga. The Ertiga is set to compete against the Mahindra Marazzo and the Honda BR-V in this segment.
