Tata H5X spied in Wakad, Pune wears heavy camouflage but looks similar to the concept showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo.
At this year’s Auto Expo, Tata Motors successfully managed to create a lot of buzz for its H5X SUV by showcasing the vehicle in concept form to the masses. Featuring the IMPACT 2.0 design language, the car has been spotted a couple of times in the past. This time around, MotorBeam reader Akash Sharma has captured a heavily camouflaged test mule in Wakad, Pune. The India launch, however, is still some time away as the H5X is expected to go on sale only in the first half of 2019.
Despite the heavy camouflage, the new spyshots reveal the car’s side and rear profile closely. The H5X seems to carry the contours of the concept really well and looks quite substantial and imposing on the road with its sculpted tail section and flared wheel arches. The H5X will be positioned as Tata’s flagship car to go against the Jeep Compass, Hyundai Tucson and the like. To be made available in 5-seater and 7-seater configurations, the H5X is underpinned by the Land Rover Discovery Sport platform.
This, coupled with an optional 4WD system, will make the SUV a capable off-roader. As part of the new design language, Tata Motors is working hard to retain as much design elements from the concept version as possible. Interiors of the vehicle were leaked in earlier spyshots and, going by Tata’s current crop of products, it is expected that the vehicle will be loaded to the gills with features.
The H5X is likely to be powered by a 2.0-litre Fiat-sourced MultiJet II diesel engine that currently does duty on the Jeep Compass. The domestic carmaker is also considering petrol and hybrid powertrains to go along with the fuel-burner option. Price is expected to remain in the vicinity of Rs. 16 to 20 lakhs (ex-showroom) depending on the variant.
