Over the years through the introduction of the NS 200, RS 200 and the recent NS 160, Bajaj has indeed taken the Pulsar brand to the premium segment. However, the decade-old workhorses, the Pulsar 150, 180 and the 220 haven’t received a major overhaul in terms of design since 2010 but that is soon going to change. The automaker is reportedly working on the next-generation Pulsar and internally, it is called the UG6 Pulsar.
The UG6 Pulsars will be BS-6 compliant and the new engine platform is said to have a scalability starting from 150cc stretching up to 250cc. The square engine with an equal bore and stroke dimensions and the need for a sporty and responsive engine has resulted in Bajaj working on a 4-valve fuel-injected motor. BS-6 can accommodate carburettors in smaller displacement while the higher-end Pulsars will require fuel injection technology. Currently, the new powerplant isn’t production ready but expect it to be ready by 2019. Nonetheless, the new generation powertrain will be refined than ever and will come with a more modern gearbox.
The UG6 Pulsar will feature a new design language while the traditional Pulsar silhouette is unlikely to be completely discarded. Expect newly designed alloy wheels, LED headlight, redesigned tail section and a monoshock (with minor revisions to the frame and swingarm) on the new range. To draw a clear distinction between the naked street fighter and the fully-faired models, the UG6 Pulsar 150 could likely sport a single-piece handlebar instead of the clip-ons, as seen on the TVS Apache 160 4V.
Bajaj is likely to pull the plug on the Pulsar 180 (slotted between the Pulsar 150 and 160 NS) as the Pulsar 150 (2018 model) offers similar kind of equipment while the NS 160 offers similar performance. Also, the 180 is the most irrelevant Pulsar today. The 220, though old, still continues to sell like hotcakes and is likely to be retained but however, reports suggest that it could grow to 250cc. As an overall package, the UG6 Pulsar has bigger shoes to fill and we expect Bajaj will deliver on that front.
