The 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom VIII launched in India, priced at Rs. 9.50 crore.
The 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom VIII makes its India debut today in Chennai (the place where the order has come from). The eighth-generation Phantom is priced at Rs. 9.50 crore (ex-showroom) and will subsequently be launched in Mumbai and Chennai in the next coming weeks.
First unveiled in July 2017, the Phantom VIII is based on the company’s new aluminium spaceframe platform (Architecture of Luxury in RR lingo) that has made the car’s length shorter by 77 mm. However, the new Phantom is 8 mm taller and 29 mm wider than its predecessor. In terms of looks, the new Phantom has the typical Rolls-Royce stance but with a new evolutionary design with flat surfaces.
The 24-slat grille is larger than ever and is flanked by LED split headlights with LED DRLs while the spirit of ecstasy adorns the large and long hood. When viewed from the side, the sheer length of the car is bound to astound anyone. Though the side profile is reminiscent of the previous generation Phantom, is further accentuated by the bold-looking alloy wheels. The sloping roofline and the large LED tail-lights are the highlights at the rear.
The cabin of the Phantom VIII marries luxury with technology. In fact, the company claims that the Phantom VIII is ‘the most silent motor car in the world’ with 6 mm of two-layered glazing on the window surfaces and more than 130 kg of sound insulation. The Phantom VIII gets a completely digital instrument cluster (that has multiple customisation options), huge touchscreen infotainment system (which uses BMW’s user interface but customised for the Phantom specifically) and a gallery (a glass-encased space that stretches across the dash to display an artwork or something as exclusive as the car itself). The signature starlit roof liner is offered as standard on the new Phantom.
Rear seat options are multiple. There are standard lounge seats, individual seats and finally sleeping seats. The fixed centre console contains a drinks cabinet with whisky glasses and decanter, champagne flutes and a cool box. The doors too electronically shut on the touch of a button.
Powering the Phantom VIII is a 6.75-litre V12 twin-turbocharged engine that produces 563 HP of power and 900 Nm of torque. This motor comes matched to an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox and the Phantom is still rear-wheel drive. The luxury barge accelerates from standstill to 100 km/hr in just 5.3 seconds which is impressive for a car that weighs over 2.5 tonnes. Safety features include camera system with panoramic and helicopter views, night vision camera and 7-inch heads-up display.
