Volkswagen has launched the 2018 Passat in India priced at Rs. 29.99 lakhs for Comfortline and Rs. 32.99 lakhs for Highline (ex-showroom). The Passat enters its eighth generation and rivals the Skoda Superb, Mercedes-Benz CLA, Toyota Camry, Honda Accord and the Audi A3.
The German automaker has been selling the Passat since 43 years. The MQB platform underpins the 2018 Passat. The executive sedan shares more than 50 percent of its components with the Skoda Superb. Also, this is the first sedan from Volkswagen that sits on the MQB platform.
The 2018 Volkswagen Passat gets a more contemporary and mature design. There are smooth flowing lines across the sedan. The LED headlamps with LED DRLs and the wide chrome grille with the Volkswagen badge adorns the front fascia while the sculpted bonnet adds some muscle to the car. The 17-inch alloy wheels and the LED tail-lights add some character to the side and rear profile respectively.
The interior of the 2018 Passat has received a major overhaul. Though the multi-function steering wheel will remind you of the other Volkswagen cars, there are various other premium touches to the cabin like the design on the aircon vents, an analogue clock in the centre of the dashboard which adds to the retro appeal and a touchscreen infotainment display with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
The new Passat’s cabin is more spacious when compared to the previous generation car and the boot space has gone up by 26-litres (now 586-litres). On the safety front, the sedan comes with 9 airbags, ABS with EBD, ESC, parking steering assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot mirror, front and rear parking sensors and traction control, hill hold, etc. It also gets 360-degree view cameras.
Powering the 2018 Volkswagen Passat is a 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine that produces 177 HP of power and 350 Nm of torque. The oil-burner unit comes mated to a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Volkswagen claims a fuel-efficiency of 19 km/l for the new Passat. The German carmaker will offer a petrol powered Passat at a later date.
As part of their anniversary offer, Volkswagen is offering a 2+2 year warranty for free if the car is bought this year.
