Thanks to the epic success of the Activa, India becomes the largest market for Honda in volumes.
In the Indian market, the Honda Activa is regarded as a synonym for the word scooter. While nothing much changes generation after generation, the Activa continues to be the top-selling product from Honda’s stable, clocking monthly sales of over 2.5 lakh units generally. In the motorcycle category, the CB Shine continues to lead Honda’s portfolio with monthly dispatches of over 60,000 units on an average.
With a combined production capacity of 6.4 million units, India defeats Indonesia to become the largest production center for Honda. In the first quarter of this fiscal, India contributed to 32% of Honda’s global two-wheeler sales. In India, Tamil Nadu is the biggest scooter market for Honda, while the first position is secured by Uttar Pradesh in overall two-wheeler sales.
In India, the Japanese giant sells the gearless Activa series with two engine options. The tried and tested 109.2cc unit is shared across Honda’s scooter range and produces of 8 PS of power with 9 Nm of torque. The more powerful 124.9cc engine, which was introduced in 2014, is exclusive to the Activa 125. It produces 8.6 HP of power and 10.12 Nm of torque.
Launched a couple of months back, the CLIQ scooter also shares its underpinnings with the Activa. Honda also plans to launch a Royal Enfield competitor by 2020. Besides expanding its reach in urban markets, the company also seems to be shifting focus to commuter products for rural areas.
