Benelli’s maxi-scooter Zafferano has been spotted testing near Pune in a disguised state.
The Benelli Zafferano has been caught testing in India for the first time. The maxi-scooter was spotted on NH4 near Pune recently. As with other maxi-scooters, the dimensions of the Zafferano are huge with overall length, width and height of 2168 mm, 796 mm and 1434 mm respectively. The heavier engine and vast dimensions give it a kerb weight of 155 kgs, which is around 50% more than conventional scooters in the market.
A 249.7cc single-cylinder engine powers the Benelli Zafferano, mated to an automatic transmission. It produces 20.79 BHP of power and 20.83 Nm of torque. In Indonesia, the 4-stroke motor comes with electronic fuel injection. The scooter gets telescopic forks at the front and rides on 14-inch wheels covered in 120 and 140 section tyres at the front and rear respectively. A dual-disc setup at the front hints at the possibility of the test mule being an export version.
Thanks to its 1488 mm wheelbase, the Benelli Zafferano offers a spacious footboard and a long seat. The fuel tank has a capacity of 12-litres, while the under seat storage can house two helmets. While this quarter-litre scooter looks absolutely smashing, it also gets an equally attractive dual-pod instrument cluster with a digital display in the centre. The tall windshield helps to keep wind blast at bay.
The concept of maxi-scooters is not new in India since the Kinetic Blaze was a fairly popular scooter of its time. If launched in India, the Benelli Zafferano would be a good proposition mainly because of its brand name. While there is no clarity on its India launch yet, it could be priced in the vicinity of Rs. 2 lakhs when launched. While there is no direct competitor for the Zafferano currently, prices of the TNT 25 motorcycle from Benelli start at Rs. 1.7 lakhs (ex-showroom, Mumbai).
