The top 25 selling cars in June 2017 chart sees 2 Hyundai cars making their way into the top 5.
While the entire nation awaited the biggest tax reform, the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Indian consumer looked quite a bit confused as to going ahead with purchasing a car before the GST gets implemented or postponing the purchase after it is implemented. Most of the car manufacturers saw sales numbers reducing, however we expect the July numbers to pick up as taxes on most of the car segments have seen a reduction, while it is the hybrids only that have seen a rise in taxes.
The above list is self-explanatory, so I’ll take you through the cars that couldn’t make it to this list. Fiat’s sales have been consistently falling on a month-on-month basis. It managed to sell only 167 units of the Punto, Punto Evo and the Avventura. While the Linea saw 39 homes, the Abarth Punto just managed to sell only 4 units in June 2017.
American carmaker Chevrolet saw some rise in sales in June as compared to sales in May 2017. Chevrolet managed to sell 385 units of the Tavera and 219 units of the Cruze in June 2017. Next up is Czech carmaker Skoda, that is riding on the success of the Rapid sedan. The Rapid sold 871 units while the bigger sedans, the Octavia and the Superb sold 69 and 78 units respectively in June 2017.
Japanese carmaker Toyota saw a drastic dip in sales in June 2017. Its best seller the Innova Crysta, managed to sell only 1068 units in June 2017 as compared to 5643 units in May 2017. The Etios Liva(including Liva Cross), Etios, Corolla, Fortuner and the Camry sold 228, 195, 42, 365 and 78 units respectively in June 2017.
Volkswagen’s Polo and Ameo saw 1827 and 1438 homes respectively, both together contributing over 84 percent to the total sales. I was curious to see how the newly launched Tiguan would fare against its competitors, but due the implementation of GST, the month of June remained rather unfavorable to the automobile industry. We will have wait for another month or two, to see how the Tiguan fares against its rivals.
The Datsun redi-GO continues to back Nissan’s sales contributing 2261 numbers to the total sales of 4582 units. Other hatchbacks are the Micra and GO selling 727 and 594 units respectively. Next comes Ford, selling more units of the Figo Aspire than the Figo hatchback. While the Figo Aspire saw sales of 1882 units, the Figo hatchback saw sales of 879 units. The Endeavour on the other hand managed to find 67 homes in June 2017.
The Renault Kwid still continues to be the highest contributor to Renault. The Duster sold 1233 units while the Lodgy saw sales of 168 units in June 2017. Homegrown Tata Motors managed to sell a total of 11,176 units in June 2017 of which the Nano, Zest, Tigor, Sumo, Safari Storme and the Hexa sold 167, 1595, 2163, 425, 216 and 550 units respectively. Tata Motors in fact saw a rise in sales of nearly 3 percent.
Honda too saw a 13-14 percent increase in the overall sales with the City and the WR-V selling in more numbers. While the Brio saw sales of 283 units, the Amaze reached 1193 homes in June 2017. The Jazz sold 1818 units in May while sales for June stand at 1307 units.
Mahindra’s sales registers are still backed by the old warhorses, the Scorpio and Bolero. The automaker off lately has been losing its share in the Utility Vehicles space. The KUV100, TUV300 and XUV500 sold 1449, 2121 and 1598 units respectively in June 2017. Hyundai sold a total of 37,562 units in June 2017 of which the Verna, Elantra and the Tucson contributed 326, 159 and 56 units respectively.
GST has definitely taken a toll on the country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki’s sales. Maruti sold 93,057 units in June 2017 as compared to 1,30,248 units in May 2017. While most of its cars are present in the top 25 list, the S-Cross and Gypsy are the only 2 cars that haven’t been able to sell in good numbers, selling 228 and 463 units respectively in June 2017.
