The Tata Tiago Electric is likely to head to the export markets only in its initial phase.
Homegrown Tata Motors is said to be working on an electric version of the Tiago hatchback. The automaker is also likely to start the production of the Tiago electric hatchback by the end of August 2017 which isn’t too far.
However, it has now been rumoured that Tata will focus on the export markets initially with the Tiago electric and at a later date an India launch can be expected. The company hasn’t revealed any details on the electric powertrain yet, but the Tiago electric is expected to borrow heavily from the Bolt BEV prototype, an electric version of the Bolt hatchback.
Electrification on the Tiago’s low-cost platform will help Tata reduce costs and price it competitively. The higher taxes made applicable on hybrid and electric vehicles post-GST in India, could be the reason for the carmaker to focus on the export markets initially.
The Tiago currently comes powered by a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine and a 1.05-litre Revotorq diesel engine.
