Volkswagen is gearing up to launch the 2017 Passat and Tiguan in India.
Volkswagen has started taking the Indian market seriously and this is evident from the launches it has planned for this year.
With the Passat making a re-entry into the Indian markets, the Tiguan on the other hand is a completely new offering from the German carmaker. With this, Volkswagen is aiming to make its presence felt in various segments in our market.
The new-generation Passat is built on the brand’s MQB platform. The sedan gets lots of major changes over the previous generation. Volkswagen plans to bring the diesel-powered Passat to India first. Under the hood, it is the same 2.0-litre oil-burner which is shared with other VAG cars.
This will come mated to a 6-speed DSG transmission and will make 187 HP of power. Prices for the Passat are expected to be in the range of Rs. 28-32 lakhs (ex-showroom) and it will compete with the Skoda Superb, Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.
With the Passat, we also spotted the much-awaited SUV from the brand, the Tiguan. The car was caught testing without any camouflage and like the Passat, it too shares the brand’s MQB platform. The Tiguan will be positioned slightly above the Passat and it will also get the same 2.0-litre TDI engine with the 6-speed DSG transmission.
The launch of Tiguan will see Volkswagen entering a new segment, and the Tiguan being priced at that range, will be pitted against the Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour.
