Nissan will be launching its electric car, the Leaf in India by 2018.
There are hardly a couple of electric cars on sale in the Indian market and even those fail to find too many buyers. However, customers have definitely started gaining more awareness on EVs and hybrids now. Nissan had showcased the Leaf EV in India in 2015 and it has now been reported that the vehicle will be launched by 2018.
The Nissan Leaf is the world’s highest selling electric vehicle and it has found close to 2.4 lakh homes until now. The vehicle will be brought down to India via the CBU route only and hence it is expected to cost upwards of Rs. 35 lakhs, due to our high taxes and duties. At that price point, it will compete directly with large D-segment sedans.
The Nissan Leaf doesn’t have any engine and it is powered by an electric motor that gives it a range of 160 kms on a full charge. You also get regenerative braking. The electric motor produces 107 HP of power and the battery is a lithium-ion unit. A full battery charge will take approximately 8 hours.
It is going to be very tricky for Nissan to sell good numbers of the Leaf considering that buyers over here will still prefer a large D-segment sedan like the Skoda Superb or even an SUV like the Ford Endeavour for that price. However, the Leaf will be a great brand-builder for the Japanese automaker. It will also benefit from the FAME scheme which will reduce the price of the car by a small amount.
